Cold World Hustlers are a gangsta rap group from Hunters Point, one of the most deprived neighborhoods in San Francisco. Originally, the group was a trio: 4-1-So Sic Ass Rell (aka Rell), E-Sic (real name Elton Meyers), and Big Vic (Victor Brooks). Before making music, all three were tied to the streets rather than just rap. From the very beginning, the group was closely linked with the guys from 11/5 - Taydatay and Maine-O, also from Hunters Point. Big Vic was Taydatay's cousin, and the connection was street-based rather than purely musical.
The first album, "Cold Streets", came out in 1993 - first on cassette, then on CD. Recorded as a trio, it brought the group regional recognition in the Bay Area. The album is considered a classic of underground California rap - raw, hard-hitting material without polished production. It was on this release that 11/5 first appeared - on the track "Nigga Took"
Shortly after the release of Cold Streets, Rell was shot and killed at the age of 20. This tragic event split the group's history into "before" and "after." Rell had already recorded parts of the material that later ended up on the second album - his voice can be heard on several tracks from "Iceland".
The remaining duo - E-Sic and Big Vic - released their second album, "Iceland", on November 21, 1995, on Black Market Records. It was produced by Reg, T.C., and The Enhancer. The album was more polished than the debut but kept the raw Bay Area sound. Guests on the record included U.D.I., 11/5, Cougnut, Dre Dog (Andre Nickatina), and Female Fonk. The album features 15 tracks, including "Cold Day In Hell," "Taste Da Hate," "415 Reasons," "Straight Doin' It," and more.
In 2002, Cold World Hustlers teamed up with their scene peers - 11/5, U.D.I., and Big Mack - to form a collective called The Unexpected. The result was a joint album, "U Didn't Know??", continuing the hardcore gangsta rap tradition from Hunters Point.
In 1997, the compilation "Anythang 4 Money" was released. The group also actively participated in various Bay Area compilations and collaborations, including Sucka Free's Finest. The group's active period spans roughly 1993-2005.
Cold World Hustlers never reached the mainstream, but their contribution to the underground gangsta rap scene of San Francisco is significant. They were part of a dense network of Hunters Point artists - 11/5, U.D.I., RBL Posse, I.M.P. - who shaped the unique Bay Area sound of the '90s: gritty, unvarnished, with harsh street narratives.
